3 Canadian Anti-Pot Senators Met With Jeff Sessions in D.C. For 45 Minutes

Three Conservative Senators, who are against the upcoming cannabis legalization in Canada, have met with the hardline anti-pot U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in Washington, D.C., CTV News reported on Wednesday.

The tory Senators Claude Carignan, Denise Batters, and Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu, who are in Washington this week, are members of the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee, which is one of the committees studying Bill C-45 or the Cannabis Act.

Canada’s Upper Chamber or the Senate has agreed in principle to pass the act but requires further studying.

The three Tories discussed border safety, the black market; and the risks of marijuana use and possession with Sessions but they are not disclosing yet what they heard in the meeting.

The meeting lasted for 45 minutes, Sen. Batters’ office said.

The office told CTV News that the information learned from the meeting will inform potential amendments to the government’s marijuana bills.

“Faced with the Liberals’ empty answers and broken record, we had to seek concrete and real facts right at the source,” Sen. Boisvenu, who previously called the Cannabis Act as a “piece of feces,” said in the statement.

The trip was paid for under the Senate expenses policy that allows for trips to New York for U.N. business and the U.S. capital to be reimbursed.

In early January, Sessions annulled an Obama-era policy, which allowed states the freedom to operate their legal marijuana businesses without any interference from the federal government.

There are 29 U.S. states which allow medical marijuana and about nine others permitting recreational cannabis use, however, pot remains illegal federally.
